The history - where it all began
Family Drug Support was born in 1996 when a Herefordshire mother, who was affected by her son’s substance misuse, discovered a lack of local specialised support for family and friends.
From these humble beginnings, FDS has grown into a small nationally recognised charity with a dedicated co-ordinator and team of volunteers as well as a pro-active board of volunteer trustees.
At FDS our motto is ‘Confidential Caring & Understanding’ and we offer all our clients a friendly and professional service.
In 2008 Family Drug Support was delighted to have been chosen by the Home Office as the winner of the - WEST MIDLANDS Drug Worker of the Year Award. It was a crowning moment to have all our hard work and dedication recognised on a regional and national level.
About Family Drug Support
Here at Family Drug Support we can provide a range of different services to suit your needs. We will offer you as much or as little information, interaction and support as you want, because at the end of the day we’re here to help you.
Our confidential telephone help line provides crisis support for any family member or friend who feels they need it. Our trained co-ordinator and volunteers are available to talk too about the problems you’re currently facing and fully understand the difficulty of the situation. We will offer you on going support along with advice on how to cope, useful drug or alcohol misuse information and signposting to other agencies if necessary.
FDS provide a range of helpful information on our website, including drug and alcohol advice, coping methods and words of comfort. Please visit us on: www.familydrugsupport.com
We understand that sometimes you would prefer to receive support via e-mail as opposed to in person and we’re more than happy to oblige. We guarantee that you will still receive the same confidential help and advice from our volunteers as you would with the telephone help line.
We also hold a monthly support group meeting in Hereford which offers a much needed facility for families to meet, chat and share their common experiences. It also allows you to acquire information on a range of topics, including drug or alcohol treatment, Criminal Justice issues, designer drugs and much more. We aim to focus on self-help and coping strategies to enable you to lead as normal a life as possible.
FDS support booklets
When you register with Family Drug Support, we will automatically provide you with one of our range of booklets that we think will be most helpful at the beginning. These booklets contains a range of detailed information including the effects of drug or alcohol misuse along with helpful contact addresses, telephone numbers and websites. We can either send it to your home address or bring it along to one of our support group meetings, whichever is easiest for you.
